1.1.4 Appointment of defence, army, naval and air attachés, defence research attachés and their deputies

Article 7 of the VCDR

The Federal Foreign Office (Division 703) should be notified of the appointment of military, naval and air attachés and their deputies, as well as defence research attachés, in good time before their intended arrival in Germany.

The Note Verbale should be accompanied by

  • a detailed curriculum vitae in German or English

  • and a copy of the data page of the official passport.

Designated defence, army, naval or air attachés or deputies may only enter Germany once the Federal Foreign Office has communicated that they are welcome in the Federal Republic of Germany and any necessary visas have thereafter been issued through the relevant German mission abroad.

The Federal Foreign Office requests that it be notified subsequently of the actual date of arrival and recall of the attaché.

Multiple accreditation (Article 5 of the VCDR)

Non-residential accreditation in the Federal Republic of GermanyNon-residential accreditation in third States
  • permanent seat in a third State
  • prior to entry into Germany, proof of notification to the government of this state should be attached to the Note Verbale
  • permanent seat in the Federal Republic of Germany
  • at the appropriate time after entry into Germany, proof of notification to the government of the state of non-residential accreditation should be submitted
